STEADYMED, LTD.

SteadyMed is an early stage Israeli medical device company that is at the cutting edge of personalized drug delivery technology.  SteadyMed’s revolutionary “Smart” patch enables self administration of drugs at home with precise dosage and complete control.  The Patch Pump™ is a personal “smart package” for delivering liquid drugs at the rate desired, in accordance with the patient’s individual changing needs.  The Patch Pump™ is a miniature patch shaped device, adhered to the skin, which contains the drug to be delivered together with an electronic system for its delivery.  A button on the patch gives the patient control over dosing, for example, to delivery a larger dose (a bolus) when the patient is in pain.

The driving mechanism used is based on the exploitation of a side-effect of batteries – the fact that they change their volume when they are discharged.  SteadyMed has exploited this “bug” as a “feature” – having the expanded battery press against a flexible drug reservoir, causing the drug to be expelled.  The Patch Pump™ can deliver drugs across the skin either via a tiny catheter or via trans-dermal means such as micro-arrays.  The device is optimized for the delivery of the new generation of biological drugs, such as therapeutic antibodies, which specifically target diseased cells.  Many such drugs are highly viscous and/or require sophisticated delivery regimes.  The Patch Pump™ is especially suited to “package” these drugs and delivery them in an optimal, personalized manner to the patient.
